By restricting yourself to solid starters you give yourself a better chance of making better hands at showdown. Sticking mainly with pocket pairs, big and suited aces, and perhaps king-queen is not a bad way to begin. Many players just getting started with no-limit hold'em correctly find it worthwhile to be selective with their starting hands.
